La Liga outfit Real Betis have officially confirmed the signing of William Carvalho from Sporting CP.
Carvalho, a 26-year-old holding midfielder, had spent his entire senior career to date on the books of Sporting, having come up through the club’s youth ranks after joining as a youngster in 2005.
He since went on to establish himself as one of, if not the most highly-regarded midfielder in all of Portuguese football, with Carvalho’s unusual combination of size, power and pure technique having seen him linked with more-or-less all of Europe’s top clubs.
As such, the fact that he had remained at the Estádio José Alvalade even up until this point was somewhat surprising, with the likes of Arsenal, Juventus and even Real Madrid known to be long-term admirers of Carvalho’s talents.
However, following the shocking fan attack at Sporting’s training ground back in May which left a number of players and staff members injured, Carvalho quickly became one of a rake of star players to set his sights firmly on a departure from the Primeira Liga giants.
This summer, Everton, Inter Milan and West Ham United had been the most persistently-touted destinations for the experienced Portuguese international up until last week, when a surprise suitor, in the form of La Liga outfit Real Betis, jumped firmly to the front of the queue for Carvalho.
And, as revealed in an official statement across the club’s social media channels and official website last night, Betis have wasted little time in pushing a deal over the line, with Carvalho having put pen to paper on a contract at the Estadio Benito Villamarín until 2023:
